Academic Projects Afghanistan, Aga Khan University (APA-AKU) is an extension of the Aga Khan University (AKU) that is chartered as an international University with campuses and academic programmes in eight countries across three continents. APA - AKU, through various academic entities of AKU has been supporting national academic institutions in Afghanistan since 2002 for their capacity building. These include Por. Ghazanfar Institute of Health Sciences (GIHS), Kabul and its regional satellites for nursing and midwifery education, Kabul Medical University for it baccalaureate program in nursing and for postgraduate medical education (PGME).
It is also supporting the General Nursing Diploma Programme in Faizabad, Badakhshan and running a research project on the Surveillance of Mothers and Children there. Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SoNaM) provides technical assistance to strengthen the quality of nursing and midwifery education in Afghanistan through APA - AKU. In 2012, a Training and Policy Unit (TPU) was established at the GIHS, which is the centre of Institutes of Health Sciences (IHSs) system in Afghanistan. The TPU - GIHS is responsible for development and revision of the curriculums, standards and policies related to nursing and midwifery education; building capacity of trainers from GIHS as well as the regional IHSs for effective implementation of revised curriculums, standards and policies. For maintaining quality of nursing and midwifery education, TPU will continue capacity building initiatives and monitoring and evaluation visits to the entire IHS system for enhancing the quality of these programmes.
