USAID/Promote Scholarship Purpose:
In an effort towards women empowerment in Afghanistan the Professional Development Institute (PDI) of the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF), with the support of The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will enroll 540 women in its certification programs on full scholarships over five years under the PROMOTE project. The impact of completing these certification programs is distinct from a one-off, short-term training; at the conclusion, women will possess internationally recognized, highly esteemed certifications. The impact that the availability of such opportunities in four regions (Herat, Mazar, Kandahar and Jalalabad) of the country offers is significant: priming women to enter careers and jobs in management and finance that will not only change the lives of these particular women, but also has the potential to alter the landscape of these highly respected professional fields and set a precedent for other women.
AUAF/PDI through these scholarships will train a total of 540 students (108 students per year in average) throughout the life of the project (5 years). These 540 positions are designed to be held by unique students; in other words, a student receiving a scholarship for one certification course will not be available to receive a second scholarship for a second course.
The Professional Development Institute (PDI) is a branch of the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) based in Kabul. It offers a broad range of training and education courses throughout Afghanistan to private businesses, non-profit agencies, NGOs, and governmental sectors. The Institute draws on the expertise of the world-class faculty at the American University of Afghanistan and others to provide courses custom tailored to specific needs as well as courses offered on an open enrollment basis. This expertise includes English language, business administration and management, public administration, and information technologies. PDI is the exclusive tester for civil aviation English in Afghanistan and also provides testing services for internationally recognized certifying organizations. Some of the many tests PDI offers include: iBT TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, GMAT, ACCA, FIA, CAPM, Microsoft, Cisco, EC-Council and CompTIA. PDI has three units which consist of Business, English and Information Technology in Kabul as well as in four regional centers such as Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif, Herat and Jalalabad. PDI’s objective is to educate Afghans in their relevant field for the better future of Afghanistan.
