Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC)

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is Switzerland’s international cooperation agency within the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). The overall goal of the Swiss Cooperation Strategy for Afghanistan 2015-2018 is to sustain and enhance accountable institutions on the subnational level, thus contributing to good governance, the respect of human rights and the rule of law and the promotion of inclusive and sustained socioeconomic development.

Interventions within the Governance and Human Rights domain aim to support an inclusive state, responsive to the people’s rights and needs. Switzerland supports both civil society stakeholders and state institutions in their work to advance good governance, human rights and the rule of law, while placing particular emphasis on the elimination of violence and discrimination against women and children.

The Sustainable and inclusive socio-economic development domain focuses on inclusive socio-economic development, especially of marginalized rural households. Switzerland contributes to improved livelihoods through increasing agricultural productivity (natural resource management incl. disaster risk, promotion of value-chain) as well as through labour-intensive rural infrastructure projects in poor and remote areas. It also scales up its engagement in the education sector given the importance of the right to education per se and of education as a vector for transformational change.
