University degree in agriculture, especially horticulture major or any other related degree.

Master degree in the above disciplines will be given preference.



 



Experience:



·         For Masters At least 3 years and bachelor holders at least 4 years relevant experience in grape production, processing and canopy management with a strong background in conducting trainings and provision of extension services to farmers.



·         Have experience in implementing Agriculture and Rural Development projects.



 



Skills:



·         Familiarity with conduct of production level analysis, market analysis, and grapes processing/ marketing is desirable.



·         Basic Computer Skills including familiarity with MS Office Programs;



·         Must be fluent in Pashto, Dari and English;



·         Strong team orientation and staff development skills;



·         Performance management and improvement skills;



·         Good written and oral communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills;



·         Have good knowledge of communities and villages in Kandahar Province.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Grape Production Officer will constantly liaise with Project Implementation Coordinator and CARD-F IU Director and is responsible for the training and technology transfer to the extension agents and the beneficiary farmers in order to increase the grape farmers’ incomes through a defined technology package for the grape vine production and collection.



The Officer will carry out the following services and develop and implement a mechanism for the delivery of an effective and sustainable extension service.



 



Assist and train farmers on best practices (i.e. trellising) of grape production to improve the quality and quantity of their grape yields;

Assess the farmers current practices and provide guidance on how to correct any issues that may limit productivity;

Train Extension Agents on best production techniques, vine management and the grapes harvest collection;

Analyze the current situation of grape production, the structure of the sector and trends, etc;

Identify needs of grape farmers and industry and list priorities for future work;

Set up affordable, sustainable scheme using improved inputs;

Set up demonstration fields for practical training in best vine management systems;

Develop grape farmers capacity to increase the supply of quality table grapes and raisins;

Develop awareness of grape farming households regarding their responsibilities as commercial market suppliers;

Investigate and trial new concepts like ‘dried on vine’ raisin processing techniques;

Design a need based training program for the Kishemshkhana entrepreneurs on operation and management to produce quality raisin.

Provide support services to the entrepreneurs concerning raisin drying operations;

Train Extension Agents on raisin processing;

Monitor work schedule and ensure work within timeframe.

Develop and maintain logs for all environmental legislation and ensure all modification according to regulations.

Train Extension Agents on the technology package to be transferred to farmers and organize study tours when appropriate;

Advice and take active part with regards to beneficiary selection, site selection, land preparation and other activities;

Advice beneficiary farmers on better use of fertilizer, water and other resources required for grapes production;

Ensure that trellising fabrication is done in accordance with the approved standards considering the quality assurance and quality control functions;

Prepare training materials for the Extension Agents and farmers;

Assist the Project Manager/ Coordinator in the implementation of the project activities and preparation of progress reports;

Travel frequently to the project areas and provide extension services to beneficiary farmers on regular basis;

Any other task assigned by the Project Manager/Coordinator.
