Duties & Responsibilities


Mercy Corps has been continuously operational in Afghanistan since 1986 implementing more than 50 programs and is currently working in nine provinces of Afghanistan. Mercy Corps among other sectors is engaged in the fields of agriculture animal health and economic development. Programs focus on the improvement of the lives and livelihoods of Afghan farmers businessmen and women with an increasing focus on youth. Current programs include agricultural and economic development initiatives and civil society programs that improve participation and develop communities’ sense of ownership and their demand for accountable public services. Historically donors have included the European Commission (EC) German Finance Bank KFW the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Department for International Development (DFID) and the United States Department of State (USDS).

Mercy Corps will be implementing a 30 months UNODC supported ‘Action with Alternative Livelihood AWAL Perennial Horticulture Development’ Program in Kandahar Helmand and Urozgan Provinces. The program aims to strengthen viable alternative livelihoods in select value chains in perennial crops such as Almond Apricot grapes pistachios and saffron and vegetables. It will follow an approach that combines improved governance with community-led market-driven agricultural economic development that actively engages with public private and civil society sector actors.


The cook/ cleaner must perform all duties related to the preparation of meals for Mercy Corps staff.  Maintaining a high level of hygiene in the kitchen and in food preparation is the most important task of the cook. And would ensure the entire office cleaning and will provide cleaning services to all staff.


  • To provide quality catering services which meet the needs of care recipients visitors staff and the operational requirements of the MCA.

  • To ensure that all activities reflect the philosophy of respect and dignity of care recipients and are conducted in accordance with the Policies and Procedures; and routines of MCA.

  • To work as a leader of the workplace team to facilitate quality outcomes for all care recipients visitors staff and others within a safe and pleasant environment.

  • Tasks are coordinated and carried out in consultation and cooperation within the workplace team.

  • Prepare and serve daily meals as required.

  • Keep the kitchen and cooking utensils clean.

  • Administer MC house money – track house expenses and balance;

  • Follow good hygienic rules in personal cleanliness and food preparation.

  • Prepare firewood as needed for kitchen and office.

  • Assist in preparing for visitors and guests

  • Assist the Administration Officer manager to organize parties and meetings and guests.

  • Prepare shopping needs and do shopping as necessary always trying to keep costs down to reasonable levels.

  • · Maintain the cleanness of the office kitchen facilities and bathrooms; dusting vacuuming washing etc.

  • Do the laundry of office and guesthouses (curtains sheets and kitchen towels included)

  • Identify needed repairs in the house and premises - alert property officer for action;

  • Be available to help the Admin/HR Officer to organize parties and meetings.

  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission in Afghanistan;

  • Any Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
