Completion of high school and technical school certification or advanced degree in diesel engines electronics and/or related field with courses in shop mechanics is desirable.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in functions such as inspecting repairing of forklifts telehandlers and other material handling vehicles and equipment.

  • Experience operating forklifts and other MHE vehicles.

  • Knowledge is mandatory of: mechanical theory applying to vehicles; using lubricants methods of hoisting and handling heavy mechanisms; using tools; internal combustion engines; electricity and hydraulics.

  • Ability to successfully pass medical requirements and maintain requirements for duration of work.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Experience working on Toyota Hyster Manitou Volvo International Caterpillar Manitou Bobcat and JCB forklifts telehandlers and other MHE equipment and vehicles.

  • Specialized knowledge and skills in diesel and heavy automotive repair and maintenance.

  • Skilled in replacing major components and parts on general purpose vehicles.

  • Knowledge of diagnostics and ability to conduct technical research on the computer.

  • Through knowledge of vehicle spare parts and assemblies.


  • Work is considered heavy physical work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Must possess strength stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and long duty days/weeks.

  • Possible exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals.

  • Living and working conditions at assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable.

  • Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities.

  • Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions.

  • Under special circumstances must be able to work on  weekends/night shift  

Must be able to:

  • Walk lift reach stoop stand grasp balance climb kneel and crouch for extended periods of time;

  • Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts;

  • Operate machines motor vehicles hand tools and job specific equipment and tools;

  • Determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work;

  • Demonstrate the ability to hear and accurately interpret mechanical technical and business information in an environment subject to noise vibrations etc.

  • Perform all work safely in a fast-paced work environment.

Duties & Responsibilities


The fork lift and MHE Mechanic will perform scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance and necessary repairs to forklifts telehandlers and other MHE (Materials Handling Equipment) equipment as directed by AKN Logistics Fleet Management team. This experienced individual has thorough knowledge of MHE electrical & hydraulic systems. Disassembles and overhauls hydraulic/electric motors hydraulic cylinders and experience with diesel forklift engines. Activities include inspection diagnostics repair and rebuild of forklift components and assemblies.


  • Determines the overall mechanical condition of forklift telehandlers and other MHE corrections of deficiencies required orders parts and effects repairs.

  • Maintain all forklift trucks telehandlers and other MHE and site support vehicles.

  • Diagnose Repair and maintain forklifts telehandlers and other MHE equipment by utilizing necessary tools following OEM Maintenance Policy and Procedures.

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose all electrical and hydraulic issues. Component rebuild and hydraulic repair.

  • Use repair manuals parts manuals and parts diagrams to troubleshoot engines engine fuel systems transmissions or other components on the equipment.

  • Perform all necessary safety checks on the equipment per procedures & policy.

  • Use hand & power tools to remove install replace re-build repair & test parts/equipment on engines engine fuel systems transmissions & other components.

  • Perform routine maintenance checks such as checking batteries lubricating equipment and machinery.

  • Thoroughly analyzes and understands forklifts and MHE parts malfunctions by visual and auditory examination or through the use of test equipment.

  • Diagnose repair adjust overhaul or replaces major assemblies or sub-assemblies such as power and drive trains electrical air-conditioning fuel emission brake steering pumping suction and agitator and hydraulic and traction systems.

  • Perform general purpose forklift maintenance activities including installation repair trouble-shooting diagnostics preventive and unscheduled maintenance.

  • Repairs components by replacing worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts.

  • Reassembles adjusts and tests repaired units for proper operation.

  • Calibrates and adjusts pumps meters safety unit proportioning devices and limiting devices to ensure proper operation.

  • Synchronizes remote or manual electrical and hydraulic controls.

  • Adjusts power boosters clutches drive chains and tension devices.

  • Performs hydrostatic hose testing of refueling vehicle and equipment.

  • Performs preventive and special maintenance uses technical publications in maintaining vehicles to prescribed manufactures maintenance schedules.

  • Ensures special inspections and maintenance on vehicles are performed correctly such as corrosion control winterization storage and shipment.

  • Properly annotates all maintenance performed on prescribed forms for data collection purposes.

  • Adheres to all established safety policies and standards to include identification use and proper procedures for handling or disposal of hazardous waste.
