Qualification:

 

  • Master’s degree with 5 years of relevant experience; Bachelor’s degree with 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working in private sector development and/or experience as a business advisor
  • Experience working/consulting with private sector firms at the firm level to support growth
  • Knowledge of business and financial operations strategic planning return on investment and risk mitigation
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder consultation working with professional associations and reaching consensus among multiple private sector stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a cross-cultural environment
  • Strong staff management and supervisory experience
  • Ability to lead strategic planning results-based management and reporting
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills
  • Proven leadership ability versatility and integrity with experience working with individuals in culturally diverse settings

Duties & Responsibilities

The Private Sector Development (PSD) Team Leader provides technical innovative leadership to the WED Team partners and client businesses. S/he will model and assure excellence best practices and to catalyze investment and advance business growth opportunities for women-owned businesses while building and empowering her/his Afghan colleagues.  The PSD Team Leader will support the Chief of Party and the team by identifying innovations entrepreneurship opportunities and product and service upgrading needs and opportunities through inclusive market driven strategies. 

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance in the following:
  1. Establishment of an SME assistance effort grounded in enterprise competiveness and buyer-led approaches and methodologies 
  2. Strengthen and support business incubation and acceleration services in Afghanistan
  3. Support efforts to improve the bankability and investment readiness of Afghanistan women-owned SMEs.
  4. Hold all skills and knowledge required of the Business Development Advisors in order to strengthen their technical abilities hold the team accountable to objectives and indicators and identify gaps.

Access to Finance Experience:

  • Experience with developing credit applications for micro meso and large loans
  • Experience with microfinance matching mechanisms based on partnerships with the private sector and educational institutions  
  • Experience working with financial institutions such as commercial banks  to improve access to financial services for micro small and medium enterprises especially those led by or staffed by women 
  • Background in investment promotion especially towards women-led and staffed sectors 
  • Experience supporting entrepreneurs and/or self-employment    

Background with multiple Business Sectors:

  • Understanding of and experience in Afghanistan’s major and growing industries including: 

  1. Agriculture including agri-processing 
  2. Creative Industries Cluster
  3. Agriculture including agri-processing 
  4. Creative Industries Cluster
  5. Carpets and Textiles 
  6. Gemstones and Jewelry
  7. Arts 
  8. Marble and Granite

  • Experience supporting women-owned businesses and those that employ a significant number of women in addition to supporting women who work from home.  

Business Development Advising:

  • Experience working with enterprises of multiple sizes (from MSMEs to large firms) to develop business plans access finance and increase sales.
    History of working with Business Development Service (BDS) providers focused on women-led enterprises. 

  1. Experience with export facilitation 
  2. Able to advise and experience with:
  3. Elevating financial literacy to include bookkeeping budgets and financial report for profit and loss as well as taxation
  4. Improving operations
  5. Improving sales marketing branding and customer base
  6. Identifying expansion opportunities
  7. Developing communications
  8. Preforming risk analysis
  9. Analyzing employee (and labor) impact on revenue
  10. Analyzing vendors suppliers and contracts
  11. Moving the business to understand and use return on investment (ROI) methodologies
  • Ability to innovate and work with Afghanistan businesses and services to improve the ability of women minorities displaced people and others likely to be marginalized to successfully join the private sector
  • Measure success – contribute to the WED team’s understanding of measuring success specific to women-owned business contributions to economic growth and job creation. 
  • Review prepare and submit monthly quarterly and annual progress report to the senior management and PMU.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Supervisor.
