OVERALL PURPOSE

To conduct kitchen garden hygiene and nutrition behavior change communication (BCC) workshops

PROJECT OVERVIEW

An Integrated Emergency Response for Drought Affected Communities in the Central Highlands of Afghanistan: Medair is implementing drought response projects in Daikundi and Bamian Provinces of Afghanistan. Selected vulnerable families will be able to participate in a Kitchen garden project which will help increase diet diversity. Behaviors change communication will strengthen the interventions of all proposed sectors and mainstreamed protection will ensure project activities are meaningful accessible and safe for beneficiaries.

Nutrition project seeks to respond to the elevated number of drought-induced malnutrition cases through provision of quality of life-saving services for the treatment of acute malnutrition in children under five years pregnant and lactating women. Cash for work and direct cash transfers to vulnerable families will increase economic access to local markets for essential food commodities and provide durable DRR structures with associated training to improve community resilience. Medair’s WASH activities aim to reduce the vulnerability levels of family members to water-related and other preventable diseases.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities

• Implementation of training programme for behaviour change in kitchen garden hygiene and nutrition through KG hygiene and NUT promoters.


• Surveys and monitoring


• Community relations and acceptance for good and positive behaviour change

General responsibilities

• To uphold Medair values and to contribute to the wellbeing of the team as an active member


• To adhere strictly to Medair National Staff Regulations


• To adhere strictly to Medair Security Plan and the SOPs relevant to this role.


• To conduct all Medair activities honestly and to report any issues to the line manager or a member of the Medair management team


• To be flexible and willing to assist in other areas of work as requested by the line manager


• Help ensure the safety of the staff in the field and inform the Manager or Projects Co-ordinator of any development related to security in the field

MAIN ACTIVITIES

1. Implementation of training programme for behaviour change

• Assist in selection of BCC promoters with communities


• Organise and carrying out training events in each village


• Train the hygiene & nutrition promoters in the BCC messages and kitchen garden techniques to be trained in


• Support the hygiene & nutrition promoters in the delivery of the messages house to house and to groups of women in the communities with supervision and monitoring


• Monitor and report on the progress of hygiene & nutrition promoters


• Ensure completion of training records


• Ensure payment of incentives to hygiene & nutrition promoters


• Ensure distribution of beneficiary incentives in the communities according to the plan.


• Ensure to conduct the monthly Assemble meeting.


• Conduct monthly assemble meeting for female staff in communities.

2. Surveys and monitoring

• Conduct KPC and monitoring surveys at household level and post training as requested

3. Community relations

• Ensure good community relations and a good explanation of project activities to communities as needed


• Ensure beneficiary accountability is carried out and report any feedback to the Manager.


• Ensure to have a good communities acceptance
