Hard Skills

  • A suitable educational qualification in community health public health nursing and social science.
  • 3 years’ experience in managing and implementing hygiene promotion and/or sanitation activities including program design implementing and evaluation.
  • Sound understanding of a community development approach to water supply sanitation and hygiene promotion project work
  • Experience in undertaking participatory appraisal and monitoring and evaluation
  • Experience of mentoring and building the capacity of communities and partners is desirable
  • Sound report writing skills
  • Strong verbal communication and written skills both in local language and English
  • Good organizational and project management skills
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Word Power Point and Excel
  • Good presentation skills and ability to communicate to varied audiences including those with limited literacy
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Ability to plan own work set priorities and manage time effectively

Success Summary

The position is based in Herat and it requires travel to Kabul and possibly other provinces within Afghanistan.

Mercy Corps team members represent the agency both during and outside work hours when deployed in a field posting. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws customs and MCs policies procedures and values at all times and in all in-country venues.

Duties & Responsibilities

General Position Summary 

Under the direct supervision of the Community Mobilization / Hygiene Promotion Coordinator the Hygiene Promotion Officer conducts hygiene promotion activities in the program target area. Key activities include baseline and end-of-the project surveys and assessments and hygiene promotion sessions in the target villages/settlements. The Hygiene Promotion Officer will also assist the Community Mobilization / Hygiene Promotion Coordinator designing appropriate hygiene & sanitation awareness promotion approaches and develop materials.
 

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Carry out hygiene and sanitation assessment and baseline survey.
  • Assess the training needs of the target population plan and design and develop hygiene and sanitation training materials.
  • Facilitate and deliver hygiene and sanitation training to the hygiene volunteer workers hygiene and sanitation committees and the program beneficiaries
  • Support the identification and recruitment of community hygiene/health volunteers.
  • Ensure that sustainable systems are set in place for longer term hygiene promotion needs including provision of all necessary trainings.
  • Ensure that all water and sanitation work is carried out in a manner which is sensitive to the needs of children and women.
  • Regularly visits project sites deliver hygiene and sanitation awareness campaign and training sessions.
  • In close liaison with the Community Mobilization Coordinator assist with monitoring & evaluating all health and sanitation inputs and project outcomes in accordance with the programme indicators established.
  • Timely prepares and submits of work plans and required reports
  • Ensures networking and coordination of activities with other stakeholders and partners
  • In consultation with Community Mobilization / Hygiene Promotion Coordinator ensure regular monitoring of program activities to determine the success of interventions and recommend changes.
  • Provide regular feedback on the performance and areas for improvement
  • Working closely with the water and sanitation engineering team to mobilize the communities to support the construction and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities such as water points latrine and bath areas.
  • Performs any other duty assigned by the supervisor.
